This is a collection of information about the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980. It includes correspondence between the Washington State Library (WSL) and the University of Washington Libraries about the establishment of a Mount St. Helens Collection. WSL intended to acquire materials which reflected the actual events as well as items which explore the ecological, economic, sociological and psychological effects of the eruption. WSL began to collect these materials and they are reflected in this collection. There are 4 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings from about March through Nov. 1980 that were collected from around the State. The scrapbooks were a gift from Rhonda & Jim McNutt.

For its first fifty years, the library had been housed in a succession of temporary spaces culminating in a series of inadequate quarters in Denny Hall. Maud P. Mitchell was born about 1883 in Oregon. She married Chas. R. Mitchell and by 1920 they were living in Chehalis, WA. Charles was an assistant cashier at the bank. Charles had become a banker by 1930. Between 1957 & 1958 Charles passed away. And Maud passed away on 29 May 1960 in Chehalis, WA.
